I started shooting trap
I am using and 870 with a custom trap stock. I shoot around 4 rounds a day. I dont know if it is the custom stock or just the 870, but it is pounding the poop outta my shoulder. I have some skin missing and started bleeding through my shirt the other day. Im thinking about moving to an 1100. Has anyone else had this problem? Im usind lite 1 1/8 ounce loads, loaded with 700x. Thanks

Wittum,
There's something about them 870's, They kick the hell out of you. I was on a cruise one time and shot some trap with the same damn gun, had a sore shoulder for a couple of days.
You'll find the 1100 a lot easier, but they clang like hell. Try a nice Browning over & under, or Bernadelli.0 -

I replyed to your last post and I believe your topic was deleted by the moderator as it had received many replies(apparently they cut it off after X number of replys (???-you were only listed for a day or so ??).
To cut to the chase -Try (and probably) buy an 1100 trap-reasonably inexpensive-very reliable (if you keep it clean) and should you need parts they are readily available and very reasonably priced. Many, many world class shooter (both trap and skeet) have shot 1100's.
A great plus factor for the 1100 is recoil reduction-which sounds like a feature you might appreciate. Nothing is better than experience,so try one for a few rounds.0 -
Look for a shooting jacket with a padded shoulder. Then you have somewhere to put your 25 (or more) straight patches. 0 -
I had a 870, and shoot a full case when trap shooting.I had the same problems as you, but after 250 rounds, not 4. After considering price, I went with a Benelli Nova pump, with a recoil reducer. Total cost was 400.00. They also have extended choke tubes, with recoil reduction. Thats another 60.00.

Be carefull about buying a 1100 rem I did and it kicked the **** out of me, It was an older one with a real tight chock. Talk to some of the members at your trap range, most are very friendly and will let you try their guns. I bit the bullet and bought a Browning SXT over and under It's very easy on recoil. One bad thing, they are expencive but they hold their resale. Good luck guy. 0 -
If you like the 870 try putting a recoil pad on it that should solve the problem. And no doubt you will shoot better, your shoulder must have took a real beating.
Best!!

I went through the same thing with the 870, switched to a 1100, and found it a pleasure to shoot. The trap grade 1100, unlike the field grade, comes with a built-in recoil pad; so, you don't need to fool with a jacket or add-on recoil pad.
Since I reload, I bought a Shell Catcher, a spring steel piece that clips on the right side of the receiver. Even if you don't reload, it saves picking up the empties.
