7mm STW performance and rifles?
Anyone here know about the 7mm STW cartridge? Would it make a useful long range hunting round? how about 1000 yd. competition as apposed to the 300 win mag? with a 140 gr. hollowpoint at 3450 fps and 3700 fpe, the bullet drops only 26.8 inches at 500 yds from a 200yd zero. seems almost ideal for long range. my last question is can it hold its own against the 30-338? i saw a custom rifle used for 1000 yd shooting in this caliber that shot 130 gr bullets and shot moa all day at 1000 yds. can the 7mm STW do this also? any help is appreciated

Don't know about 1000yd competition, but a friend of mine is dropping deer at 500yds all day long with a 140gr bullet in his. Keep the barrel clean, as the wildcats tend to foul more quickly, and you should be pleased. I do however, think that the 140gr bullet will have a tougher time with wind drift than the 30 caliber magnums pushing 180-200gr bullets.
A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.0 -
The 7mm Shooting Times Western has proved its self to be a good cartridge.I think you might be stretching the effective range of the gun.I wouldnt want to take a 1000yrd shot at any Game animal. But I believe the cartridge is here to stay.
Best!!
