1891 Argentino Modelo Cal designation
Are these rifles marked somewhere for the Cal. designation. I bought one yesterday at a shop and he only thought it was a 7.65 He did not know for sure. I know it is not a 7x57 the action/mag is too narrow and short. I have not taken it down completely yet. I figure it was a good deal at $90.00.

If it is an 1891, it is probably chambered for the 7.65 Mauser, sometimes called Belgian or Argentine. It is a great cartridge, accurate and powerful, in the 308 class. Springfield armory in Penna had some at a good price.
You could slug the bore to check, but you can get an idea by trying (A) a 270 should pass through the bore. (B) a .30 should not enter the bore but should go in a little further than in a .30 cal rifle. The bore should be .312 plus or minus.
Enjoy it. Be careful, have fun.

When you get ready to shoot it, load a fairly heavy bullet. I have a 1891 carbine and the barrel twist was for a bullet over 200 gr. I found that they will not stabilize the lighter bullets that that you find in the later miltary surplus 7.65 ammo. 0 -
I have an 91 engineers carbine. It's a blast to shoot. Surplus ammo is available cheap. Also Hornady and Graf & Son are running a batch in reloadable boxer primed brass. They also have just brass available. You can reload with any projectile that is made for the 303 British round.

I have a 1891 arg. carbine that I use for a brush gun for deer and have shot several deer with it, they are very accurate. I use 303 british 180 grain slugs and make my brass out of 8mm mousher or 06 brass, the 8mm is better because you down't have to shorten them so much, Trim them and run them in to your 765 die. works great, I use IMR-3031 powder, because of the short barrel. good luck 0 -
One more thought-
Proper designation for this caliber is 7.65X53.5mm, though it is either rounded up or down; hence you will see some call it 7.65X53, others 7.65X54, though either is correct.
