Federal Ordnance M14/M1A
Went out for bread and somehow found myself at the gun shop. A Federal Ordnance M1A had just come in on trade and set on the shelf for $400.00. Seems to be in vg condition except for a crap job somebody did on stock refinishing. What is the deal with a relatively low price for a M1A type rifle when a Springfield M1A beside it is tagged for $1,199.00? Want to ask you guys before I consider buying it. Thanks. PS: My buddy still has not made up his mind about the 760 Gamemaster.

I own 3 of these (one is unfired) and have been very satisfied with the two I've used. Both are reliable and shoot 1 inch groups at 100 yards with the issue sights if I do my part. Mine are low 4-digit 2XXX) serial numbers. Apparently the quality deteriorated as production continued; or so it is claimed by some Forum participants. I would examine it closely before buying, and perhaps do some research. 0 -
P.S. Odd thing, that--I never thought to look for bread at the gunshop. 0 -
Later ones had all Chinese parts (crudely cast), fake flash hider, and a soft-wood stock with a stain that looked like watered-down paint. Of course, none of the receivers were close to milspec.
But, even the junky ones often sell for $500-600. For $400, even I would take a chance, and I HATE the things.

Thanks for the input. Looks like it comes down to you get what you pay for. Will probably wait for a deal on the Springfield real deal.
