We have some of the biggest pigs in the country here in Alabama and I have never shot hogs with anything smaller than a 30/30 and they still get a good run in sometimes with that.It might be fine for smaller hogs but at 150 yards you might loose any larger ones.We hunt down here within about 75 yards and down so the 30/30 is still pretty strong. For that range go for .444 Marlin, .270,30/30,.308 or something stronger for the big heavy bodied pigs, and 30/30 or better for smaller pigs. The 25-06 might work well but I have never used it.

    Thanks Eric
I know what you mean, Last year I cracked a Hog at about 180 yards
with my 270 using 150gr Winchester spire point. He rolled down the canyon Screeming all the way. I guessed he was in the 380 lbs range.

I let him set for about 2 min., He was still kicken a little, I set my 270 down,(BIG MISTAKE!) Pulled out my 44 mag redhawk to finish it, and he got up
and got into the sage brush. My self and 3 other guys on horseback looked for a half mile trying to find him.

I hate that, But that has been my only loss. And dont wish to do it again.

After that Hog took that shot and then saw you closing in on him you could have looked for 3 miles and probably not found him. When they are wounded and their adrenaline is up they are runners they will run until they die still running. They can cover alot of ground very quickly. The tusked males are also ver dangerous when wounded I wont get within 20 feet of one I didnt get with that first shot I stalk up and position for a head shot the lsast thing I want to do is go rushing in and him run or charge.I do my finishig with whatever rifle Im carrying. If you want to close in on your distsance that Redhawk will put them down good try shooting the Garret 310 grain SuperHard Cast they wont get far.If you shoot under 100 yards.

Franc, Glad that load worked and like I said in the original post I haven't seen a rifle it didn't work in! Sorry about the nose! That was not a function of that load as that is not a high pressure load. Try the others I sent you and let us know if they work too! Thanks for the vote of confidence! GHD

DON'T BE MISTAKEN BY THE 25-06.WITH THE PROPER LOAD YOU CAN DROP ANYTHING.WE WENT ON AHUNT FOR BAOR THIS YEAR AND ONE WAS TAKEN WITH MY 700BDL AT 130 YARDS NO PROBLEM.ONLY ONE THING TO REMEMBER,SHOT PLACEMENT.THE 25-06 IS A VERY ACCURATE ROUND.JUST MAKE SURE HE IS DOWN FOR THE COUNT.I HAVE BEEN CHASED MORE THAN ONCE BY THESE ANIMALS.SOMETHING I CARE NOT TO DO AGAIN.THE FIRST TIME I WENT AFTER THEM WAS WITH A 300 WEATHERBY MAG AT 75 YARDS AND ALL IT DID WAS MAKE HIM MADE!! SO GOOD LUCK! STRING

Your 25-06 ought to do just fine, as others have said - shot placement is the key. Either the 120 Sierra or a 115 Barnes 'X' will do just fine. Send me an e-mail if you are looking for more people to help kill all those pesky pigs

A friend of mine took a 25-06 on a Russian Bore hunt. He made three shots to the vitals before the hog came down. The guides were running dogs so this probably was why the hog kept running but it did bring it down.

I would think with a high weight bullet the 25-06 would be more than enough for wild Boar. But I would strap my Colt Anaconda or one of my other 44 mag Handguns on just in case I got a Pistol shot.

    Good Luck!!
