Kimber Mauser Sporter 96
My biggest Gunshow regret is when I decided to make one more loop before buying the '96 Mauser sporterized by Kimber - the only one I've ever seen. Of course it was sold by the time I got back to it. As I recall it was very sharp & well done.
Anyway, I may have found another one, but I was hoping to get a little more info on them.
Did Kimber do these in lots of calibers or just 6.5 X 55?
What brand barrels & stocks were used?
Were they all stainless finish or were some stainless action/blued barrel?
Did Kimber pit their markings on these guns?
Were they called Kimber Sporter 96?
Finally, does anybody out there have one of these and if so how is it?

A guy was trying to sell me one, but he lived 2 hrs away and I never got to see it. He seemed knowledgable, and he said it is a Swede Mauser in 6.5x55 which Kimber sporterized. Gosh, he didn't mention, stainless vs blue. Are you aware that in the military version the bolt is left "in the white", which does look like stainless, while the barrel and action are blued. I was told that it had the original military barrel, which is regarded by many as the most accurate Mauser ever built for the military. I hope someone more knowledgable will weigh in, it sounded to me like a good conversion and I wish I had taken the time to go over and get that gun. A Swede that won't shoot minute of angle with a scope is an aberration.

Mr.Griggs is correct-the rifle started life as an 1896 Swede and was sporterized by Kimber. I sold exactly one through my shop to a local deer hunter who has been very satisfied with it and has taken several deer. It is very accurate, and had the silver finish; but I believe that although the barrel may be stainless the rest is satin nickel finish. If the barrel is stainless, it was bead blasted to get the same look as the nickel; but I believe it was nickel also. To the best of my recollection it was not offerred in blue. It is marked with the Kimber name, but I can not recall if it is stamped with a model number/name. You could probably get everything you need to know by phoning Kimber. 0 -
These rifles were sold by a big wholesaler from the east(I think) several years ago. I sold a few of them and they were excellent quality at a reasonable cost. They were offered in several calibers and barrel types including stainless and heavy contour. The 6.5x55 were issue barrels that were new to excellent and the others were replaced. I haven't seen any for 4-5 years.

To answer your question if they were made in any other calibers yes they did I have a 270win it has a stainless fluted barrel and a blue butler creek sythetic stock. My dad has a 300 win mag with a black stock. My buddy has one in a 280 rem. with a black stock they are all shooters. I think when i bought mine about 3 years ago the dealer also had one in a 338 mag. He originally had 6 or 7 rifles in his shop. We all got a heck of a deal on them too. 0 -
I THINK 'KIMBER' ABOVE HAS THE M-98 VERSION. THE CALS. HE LISTS WILL NOT FIT IN A M-96. NOW BACK TO YOUR QUESTION, YES KIMBER MADE THEM IN OTHER CALS. I HAVE ONE IN 7MM/O8 AND IT SHOOTS VERY WELL, I DON'T KNOW WHO MADE THE BARRELS BUT MINE SHOOTS UNDER AN INCH AT 100 YRDS. 0
