It sounds like you have a "K" frame S&W. You didnt mention the caliber. The number on the butt beginning with "K" is your serial number, and it sounds like it is a rather old gun. If your dad cut the barrel it probably started out as a 6". The "K" frames were made in .22, .32,and .38 caliber. If it has a diamond shape cut in the grips around the screw hole, that also indicates it is an old gun. If it has a screw in the right side frame between the hammer and the cylinder it was made prior to 1955.
You might be able to get a barrel from S&W in Springfield, Mass, or check your local gun shows for a used one. Good luck.

I agree that what you apparently have is a K-22, and most likey it did begin life with a 6" barrel.

The serial number you give (K 22418) indicates a 1948 production date.

Smith & Wesson likely doesn't have any barrels left for a gun of this vintage, but you might be able to snag one of the correct vintage from Numrich Arms (Gun Parts Corp.) http://www.e-gunparts.com/ordercatalog.asp There inventory changes quickly, so get a verification of availability before you order.

Another possible solution would be to keep an eye on all the auctions, including ebay..... I bid on a 6" K-22 barrel for an older model (like yours) on there about a month ago (but didn't win).

    * Another note: These barrels will require proper fitting by a gunsmith..... you can't just un-screw the old one and screw in a replacement.....
