You should be able to find something in the $300-500 range.

Springfield Mil-Spec would be a good buy....new around 475, used around 400.

Used Springfield or Norinco.

A new Charles Daily will cost about $350.00,KBI inc stands behind the guns and they have earned a good name in the Handgun world as well as the shotgun world.
Good Luck.

A Springfield Mil-Spec is an excellent entry level .45
Guns only have two enemies: Rust and Liberals....0 -
Rock Island is supposed to be a decent knock off for around $325.00 Springfield and Colt can be had for @$500.00. Stay away from the Llama and some of the other look alike junk.
When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....0 -
I cannot tell what to buy because I am not an expert. But in The Shotguns News 2nd Annual Treasury Issue there is an article "The Best Buy 1911 Type 45 Pistols" by R.K. Campbell. I picked one up at the grocery store. These 1911's were reviewed.

I personally prefer the Colt. Not that it is better. I have owned Colt, Springfield, and Auto-Ordnance. I liked them all. I sold them off. It is just that the resale value of the Colt is better. I never intended on selling them when I bought them. Sometimes you need the money.
But I have been leaning towards an Auto-Ordnance especially since Kahr Arms bought them out. http://www.kahr.com/
Search the Net for good deals. They're out there.

Spend a few extra bucks and get a Colt. You should be able to find a used one for around $400.00. Just a little more than you can buy a new rock Island for and about the same price as a new spring field. 0 -
Buy what you like and feels good to YOU.

I really like .45's. In my area, all new .45's are 600 and up. I wanted a Colt, and couldn't find a used in good shape under 500. I saw a Norinco used for 300.00 in 99% shape. I bought it, and have about 500 rounds through it. I have had only 2 jams with hollowpoint ammo, none with ball. The "made in China" leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but i'm having a good time shooting it.

I have a norinco too.
bought it new for $300. and have shot it for 8 or 9 years
still works great
wife will not let me trade it for a better gun
We shoot 50 to 100 rounds every other week so
have not needed any repairs.
happy with mine
