Can you blue cast iron?
I have a piece of cast iron, 8"x27", that I need to rustproof.
I think blueing would work -- what would it take? Any links?
I know I've worn blueing off my rifle's muzzels, but that took years in a leather scabbard. How durable is it?
Thanks

Blueing does not prevent rust; leave a blued gun in the trunk of your car a couple of nights, and you will see that.
The best you can do for cast iron is Rustoleum paint.

BLUING ITSELF IS A FORM OF RUST (IRON OXIDE). IT PROVIDES A LITTLE PROTECTION FROM (RED) RUST BUT NOT MUCH. AND YES, IT CAN BE BLUED BUT USUALY COMES OUT WITH A DARK RED COLOR RATHER THAN A DARK BLUE/BLACK AS SEEN ON MOST FIREARMS. MOST ANY GUNSMITH SHOULD BE ABLE TO 'BLUE' YOUR PIECE IF IT WILL FIT IN HIS BLUEING TANK. 0 -
Try Oxpho blue(sp?)from Brownell's.. It's a cold blue procss. does a great job on soldered double guns that can't take a hot blue tank... It goes on with a brush / rag don't need a tank and size is not a factor.... 0 -
Sends it to Ro-Bar and have them Ro-Gaurd it.That should do it.As for what NMYERS said it is true.Mt father left a Kel-Tec with the blued slide in his trunk about seven hours later it was rusted.

If you don't care what color you end up with you can spray it with LPS Cold Galvanize.
It forms a zinc-rich heat resistant galvanize coating to prevent rust and corrosion for 3 years.
Says so on the can.
I use it for metal primer.0 -
There is a dry spray on coating I've seen used on air cleaners and like parts for cars that you bake and it forms a hard layer over the surface.
At the moment, the name escapes me.0
