Traveling w/ Rifle

I will be traveling from Indy to CO, WY, SD in a couple of weeks. I'll be taking a bolt action Savage with me. The rifle is NIB but I can't lock it in the trunk. I'll be in a Corvette. What about removing the bolt, putting it in a zip lock bag, and locking it in the glove box? Naturally, I won't have any ammo with me.

    I believe that most Peace Officers would be satisfied if the gun is in a locked case. Taking the bolt out is a nice touch, but probably unnecessary if you have no ammo. The test as to whether the gun is loaded/concealed is usually if the gun and ammo, whether packed together or not, are "within control" of the occupants. That is generally interpretted to mean "within reach". That is the reasoning behind locking the gun/ammo in a car trunk. If your rifle was lying in the back seat and a box of ammo was in the glove box you could conceiveably reach both from the driver's seat and load it. If the rifle is in a locked case and you have no ammo you should be O.K. A Corvette, huh? You don't drive fast, do you? Fast drivers usually get stopped, and then my opinion (above) will be tested.

    Speaking as a Corvette owner, and a member of law enf, if you remove the bolt and carry in a locked case you should be just fine.
    Dont carry it in a zip lock plastic bag unless you want a rusted gun when you get to your destination. I dont know about your Vette, but the glove box in mine barely has enough room for a pistol, let alone a rifle.
    Put the case behind your seats so its out of sight if you need to stop for chow, and if staying in motels, take it to your room, dont leave it in the car overnight.

    Iam glad you were only going to put the bolt in the glove box, you would have needed a big hammer, but dont use a zip-lock!

    I have a '93 coupe and a 2000 conv't. I'll be taking the coupe. Yes, the entire rifle in the glove box would be a tight squeeze! What about locking the bolt in the rear lockable storage compartment? I read that direct access is a bad thing. I would have to unload the luggage compartment and unlock the storage. Would that be OK?

    Der, Heck I don't need to speed. Once I clear Iowa it's 75 and 80 limit the rest of the way!

    If legal, ship the Savage to yourself if an (o1) licensed dealer.
    If not, perhaps make pre shipping to an 01 dealer. Will cost you but I question the problems that may present themselves. Yes, a bolt removed, is a good idea, yes a bolt locked or arm sans bolt locked is
    good. Being a Vette owner, arrest me red, no room for problems that may present themselves. Just ship the arm. Enjoy the trip and obey the
    160 mph speed limit. 101

    CB...when you comin thru Colorado? Stop for a cup of coffee if you have time. Oh, and with only a couple of exceptions, youre not likely ot have problems with youre rifle out here.

    Thanks for the info guys. Axerfan, where in CO are you? I'll be going from Cheyenne to Estes Park. I see you are into bikes. Yes, I have a CBX. Bought it new in '80.

    CB...im in Denver..not that far from Estes...the hiway to Estes is only half hour from me at the most...as for bikes, got an old venture royale, little old, little tired, but it gets me where i wanna go and back. anyway, if you get close to denver, give a shout
