The experience that I have had with the 30-378 Weatherby(which is similar to the .300 ultra) is that the standard soft points by Hornaday, Sierra and the like do fine on thin skinned game like whitetail. I have seen several deer taken with a 180gr Hornaday soft point with excellent results. I would look to a controlled expansion bullet for larger game such as bear or elk. I don't think that the soft points will hold together very well at the ultra's high velocities against a tougher animal.

Another suggestion, I would use 180 grain bullets instead of 165's. The 180's pack more downrange energy and will hold up to the high velocities better.

Ive heard that anything under 180gr doesnt shoot well in the Ultra Mag what little I have read, and Layne Simpson stated anything under 180gr was not doing it justice.

The three cow elk I shot (2 with UltraMag one with .300 Weatherby) the 180 gr. Partions seemed like too much bullet. I am thinking about using 165's in my .300 Weatherby next trip out. I used 150 gr in it last year for whitetail loaded down to about 3000 fps, it worked fine on the deer I shot but probably no better than the ones I shot with my 7mm-08. Hope this helps.
