You kind of comfused me, anyway Ruger rings have a front and rear. They are differnt heights. Try switching the rings around, maybe you have the front on the rear.

    1. Could have wrong rings.
    2. Rings could be bad.
    3. Ring clamps could be tightened unevenly.
    4. Receiver could be off.
    5. Bore sighter could be off. Happened on two rifles.
    6. Scope internals can be affected/off.
    Just for starters...

Ive had that trouble more than once and the cause every time was this. When you tighten the top of the rings down you need to try to keep them evenly turned like the front two, turn each until there just snug then go to your back and tighten them all evenly at the same time.Kind of like the lug nuts on a tire. That will probably fix your problem. Hope this helps.

    Best of Luck!!

    heckler,
    What brand scope is it?
Does the scope touch the barrel or receiver anywhere?
Are the rings set into the dovetails properly?
Front and rear rings are the same height (within a couple of thousands) unless you have a mixed set.
Ruger rings fit in one spot only.
It could be in the scope itself. I have a tendacy to believe that's it's an internal problem. Try counting the clicks in both directions from center, and see what you come up with.

A buddy of mine had a similar problem with his Enfield 303 Sporter. He bought it used and it came with a mount on it. He found some rings at a gun show, and put a scope I gave him on it. We went to sight it in, and it was several feet to the right of the target at 50 yards. He adjusted the crosshairs as far as they would go to try to compensate for it. And it was still several feet over. He then told me that the scope was defective. Before this time, I honestly hadn't really taken a good look at he scope mounted on the gun. But when I approached from the rear to get a look, I immediatly saw the problem. The scope wasn't even pointed parrellel down the barrel. After dissasembly, it turned out the holes for the base had been drilled off center, and therefore the base was off center. A long story short, my buddy was pretty dissapointed.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

Bullelk, I'm not sure this is his problem but you are incorrect. The rings are different in height. They will fit in either position. I just opened a brand new pack of rings that came with my RSI and measured to make sure. There is 1/8 inch in height difference. Like I said I just opened the pack so I know they are not a mixed set. The reason I discovered this is I had a problem in mounting a new scope on my Ruger77VT and discovered the difference. After I read your post I thought maybe the VT had a special mounting system that is why I checked the rings from my RSI and just as I stated they are different in height. They will fit in either position.

    martzkj.
Before I posted that message, I measured a new set of rings, and they were the same. After I received your message, I went to double check with another set. That second set I have is different. One measured .320 and the other .440 thousands. Now, do you, or anyone know if there are different sets for different models on the Ruger 77's. I'm not sure about that. If so, I stand corrected. Sorry.

The Ruger #1, uses both rings of the same height.
    77's are different.
Let us know how you make out.

    G & G and Martzkj,
I double checked with Ruger. I was told that the 77/22's take the same rings, and the rest of the 77's take the different height ones.

Thanks for the heads up. I forgot to add the 77/22 to the Ruger #1. Which is what was asked about.

Two things Ive seen on enough Ruger rings; edges are sharp, and insides are often not finished smooth enough. Both can mark scope tubes, especially matte seems to show it more.
