Do you remember if it had a forward bolt assist or not???

You might look into getting a Colt Preban SP-1.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

You need to get a preban AR15 in order to have a flash hider installed. There are a lot of heavy barrelled 16 and 20" ARs out there
that to my way of thinking defeat the idea of a light weight combat carbine. However, there are also military weight barrels out there.
For an education, look up the Bushmaster website. If you have to have the flash hider and if it's legal in your state, you can buy preban ARs second hand. Once you have a preban lower housing, you can buy all the other parts.

Yes, the rifle you want is the Colt Sporter SP1, all of which are pre-ban. The early sporters had the open end flash hider, but the majority had the "bird cage" flash hiders which improved things by not catching on underbrush. Standard versions of either of these rifles with the 20" barrel should duplicate the look and feel of the one you carried.

Later modifications such as round, ribbed handguards, forward assist, fully adjustable rear sights, and shorter/heavier barrel would make these rifles seem quite different from what you remember.

If you have the money, you could always find a transferable M16A1. There's a few dealers who regluarly advertise in shotgun news who have a nack for finding anything you want.

what caught my attention is the fact that you stated , the gun did not feel the same as your issue weapon .i am not a vet although my father in law is .the reason the gun in the store felt wierd is it had a heavy barrel as most (ar15 or m16 clones) guns do these days .
you would achive your goal with a sp-1 as the other guys have mentioned , if you have at least $1000 dollars or more . too much for me . i think if you researched a little you'd find a replica gun simalar but look for a pencil contour barrel with a simalar muzzle break . it would be post ban but very shootable . i think bushmaster is coming out or has a pencil barrel available . i think you would be happy with a bushy ,there great guns .

I don't agree, most AR's don't have heavy barrels, but they are avaiable. I think the reason the gun felt different is solely because it didn't have the triangular A1 handguards and funiture. Though the gun certainly could have been a heavy barreled model, and could have made a difference in the gun's feel.
