Go with the 300 magnum. Same ballistics, bigger bullet. I made the switch from a 7mm Remington Mag to a 300 Weatherby Mag and I have never regretted it.

I made the switch from a browning a-bolt 300 win mag to a winchester model 70 264 win mag. Shot a deer off a permit the other night with buddys 7mm ultra mag RMEF edition. Killed good but tore the shit out of the poor critter.

i have been hunting a long time and have outfiting ang guiding buddys the question is are u going to be shooting long at long range.people may not agree but if u are going to be shooting less than 250 yards neather is the best choice.from what the outfitters and guides tell me they have had more game run and lost from being shot at close range from the big guns than with lets say 30/06 or 270.but what ever u choose have happy hunting.

My first choice would be a Weatherby in .300 mag. My second choice would be a Browning A-Bolt in .300 Mag. These calibers are flat shooting and pack a ton of downrange energy. Best of all, you can load them to take anything from whitetail to elk, moose and bear. If I was going to be limited to one rifle, the .300 would be my choice

By handloading, the two are almost the same. You can make up for the heavier 30 caliber bullets energy, by pushing the 7mm faster. therefore, the choice is a ford or chevy argument. My crop damage partner shoots a 300mag and I shoot a 7mm mag. He has never put one down any faster or with more efficiency than I have. That is out to 400-450yds. If you aren't pushing much past that, then it's just a matter of picking one and taking it home. There is a slight advantage in the 300mags, with the available bullet weights available, but for north america, all of the 7mm or 30cal bullets avaiilable will do what you need.

I will also agree, that if you are shooting less than 200-250 yds, you don't need a magnum caliber, unless hunting moose or bear etc. I have a 7mm-08 that I would put against most any north american animal (other than the largest or most dangerous), out to 250 yds and have absolutely no doubt it will get the job done very well. Don;t pay magnum prices if it is not what you need. That is unless you just gotta have one

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.
