I'm getting ready to purchase a new rifle. The question is a .270 or a 7mm Rem Mag in a Browning A-Bolt (nothing bigger). I will use it for hunting deer and elk in the Rocky Mtns. and on the plains. Any suggestions as to which rifle? I have shot both and can shoot both well. If I can get away with the lighter recoil, then I will go with the .270, but is it big enough for elk. Thanks in advance.

    I havent decided on what cal yet but im leaning toward .270(7mm rem mag is a possiblity)

    Both calibers are excellent choices for what you're hunting....the 7mm Rem mag may have an edge for longer shots. If you look at some ballistic and tragectory charts, you'll find it's a pretty flat shooter. Probably won't go wrong with either.

    Get ready for alot of answers.But heres mine.....7MAG! But if I can add one not on your list .300 win mag.I dont own one but I bought a M44 rifle from a guy a few weeks ago and he let me shoot his A-Bolt in .300 win mag and it was the nicest most accurate rifle I have ever gotten to shoot.But my friend has a savage 7mag he hunts deer with and its accurate and strong Ive never seen him need more than one shot with it.Its oe loud rifle though.That A-bolt I shot had the BOSS system on it and the only gun I have ever heard louder than that one was a sawed off 10 gauge I shot a few years ago.7 mag is good though and it will fit your needs.Those Elk better bob and weave.Good Luck.

    I am parital to .30 caliber magnums (weatherby and winchester) But I would have to go with the 7mm in this situation. The .270 is a fine cartrige for whitetail, but it is on the small side for elk

    Welcome to the forum.
    If your dead set on one of those two, I would prefer the 7mm Mag, it has more oomph and shoots flatter. I know guys who use the 270 only, and they do fine with it.

    Just remember this; "It's not how you hit em, it's where you hit em that counts"

    I myself use a 300 Weatherby most of the time when I hunt in Montana & Idaho. It has all you need and then a little more. With well placed shots, it works fine on deer also without spoiling much meat, and the other times, a 30-06.
    The 300 Win Mag is also a fine caliber, if I didn't have the Weatherby, I would have had the 300 Win Mag.

    When we're done here, you may be a bit confused, but just keep asking around until you're satisfied.

    i LIVE IN OREGON AND HAVE SHOT A FEW ELK, i USE A 338 MAG A GREAT BEAST LIKE AN ELK DESURVES TO BE KILLED QUICKLY, NOT WONDED YOUR LITTLE 270 AND 7MAG IS TO SMALL. I HATE PEOPLE THAT WOUND GAME ANIMALS AND LET THEM CRAWL OFF AND DIE A SLOW DEATH.

    If you can handle the 7mm mag, I would opt for a 300 mag also. It shoots as flat as the 7mm, but it is a larger and heavier bullet. I started with a 30-06, went to the 7mm rem mag and now have a 300 Weatherby, but the 300 Winchester Mag is no slouch either.

    A well placed 22 will kill most anything, but when hunting you do not always have the perfect shot. I have hunted both animals and the 270 is fine for deer but is too small for elk.

    Pay no mind to chuck, he knows not what he speaketh. I know an 86 year old man up here in Alaska that has taken a moose every year since 1955 with the 270 Win. Either one will do fine. Bullet placement is what matters most. Sounds like chuck likes to hit them more than once. I am a believer in 338 and bigger cartridges. I do not hunt anything bigger than caribou with cartridges smaller than a 338, but I would never tell a person a lie just to get them to buy that persons favorite cartridge.

    Would a .308 be big enough for elk?Thats my favorite rifle round is the only reason I ask.

    Thanks for all the advice. I have recently had some money bestowed upon me and it is earmarked for a rifle(s). Maybe I will purchase a .270 for deer and possibly a 300mag for elk. I really appreciate all the suggestions from members. This site is a great asset for all, from those who have great experience to those of us just starting out. Thanks again.
