Lever gun-got to be marlin. And there is a certain appeal to having a gun with the same caliber as the round.Good match.

I meant to say same name on the gun as the round.

I agree with Eric on the Marlin.

Don't send flowers when I die. Send money now, I can buy more ammo.

Both good, but I would check the weight.I would pick the lightest one as a pack rifle.

Well Rugster, immediate family members are trying to buy land along the Kenai River in Alaska and if they and when I get a chance to go the firearm I will take with me will be a stainlss Marlin 45-70; when Marlin decides to produce their 444 in stainlss then I will toss the dice to decide which goes...even then I just might have to take both...STAINLSS ALL THE WAY....

They make the best lever guns its all they know they put a lttle in the semi-auto and bolt action market for a little extra revenue but lever actions are their bread and butter.

I have to say I am happy to read all the praise of Marlin. I
own a .444 Outfitter. Her name is D'lytha. She is my favorite
firearm of the 35 some-odd firearms in my house. Others include around 8 more Marlin Lever guns.
As for Winchester...I have only picked up one in my life that was as smoothe and beautiful an action as a Marlin. It was a Win. 1992 produced in the early 1900s and currently lives in a police arsenal. Winchester just doesn't make 'em like that anymore. Too many cheaper materials.
And as for the weight...According to an article that compared both the Win. and Marlin guide versions of .444 marlin caliber both guns were very comparable. Virtually no difference.
I agree about a stainless version....that would be sweet if they made .444.
Other suggestions...if price is no object (which it usually is) there is a company that makes a great pack rifle out of the 45/70 marlin guide gun...wild west arms I think it is called. They call it a "co-pilot" and it has lots of options. Also, for ultimate Pack ability and in .444...you could try to find a Magnum Research BFR revolver. Most of the ones you find are in 45/70, but they do make .444 which I will some day own.
    that's my 22 cents.

Is it a good idea to teach a girlfriend to shoot?
