.22 Handgun Plinker Accuracy

In light of the permit CA will require handgun purchasers to have starting Jan 2003, I'm stepping up my planned purchases to complete more of them this year. This month I'd like an accurate .22 plinker and am considering the Ruger Mark II with the 10" Bull Barell, the Ruger Mark II Target with 6 7/8" barrell and the S&W 617 10 shot revolver with the 8 3/8" barrell. I'm a big handed lefty so I can't use the right handed Ruger competition models.

Have any of you tried some or all and have a basis for comparison?
I've only shot the 5/12" Mark II and am hoping to get better accuracy out of a longer barell. The S&W seemed a bit more unusual, has a fairly long barrel and I thought perhaps being a revolver it would be a more accurate, but I have never fired one.

  I put fingergroove grips on my Ruger back when--no favorites for one mitt or the other.

  Thanks for the tips. In honor of the July 9th Buy a Gun day, I ordered a Mark II Government Target model with a 6 7/8" barrel in blue. Now begins the waiting period . . .

  The Ruger 22/45 is an excellant target practice,or small game gun.I have one with a 4in Bull Barrel.It has the feel of a 1911 .45 acp.I also have a standard MKII I use alot for hunting small game.I have shot a few of the S&W and I prefer the Ruger.You need to check these guns out and see whish one feels best to you,and go from there.

  If your main thing is accuracy, unless you are a world class pistoleer or have a machine rest, I doubt it possible to tell much difference in accuracy between any of the offerings of S&W, Ruger, Colt and many others. Longer barrel, giving greater distance between sights, makes the piece seem more accurate, which it may or may not actually be. I don't think anything equals S&W K-22 as far as my preference goes, but I haven't found it any more accurate than my six other .22 revolvers, autos and single shots. As others have said, feel, heft and if possible shoot all of the models you can. Then buy the one you like best. Robert
