All 9mm Fans just got a Boost !!
Federal Cartridge company has released a new 9mm load after two years of testing. It seems as if Federal has done it again. The release of the 9mm 130gr Personal Defense load. They have made the 9mm a much Bigger contender in LE. and civilian protection as well. The new load out performs the 115gr the 124gr and the 147gr.A small Police Dept in the jurisdiction I cover are issued Ruger P89 9mm and had been using the 147gr subsonic load. Not anymore the new 130gr has a muzzle velocity of about 1250ft per second with a muzzle energy of about 390ft pounds.According to a letter issued by Federal these ballistics are perfect for one shot stop rates and according to the news letter, had taken a little over two years to perfect,Plus Ps are only offered to LE. but the Premium self defense loads are on shelves everywhere. With time they will be able to see if Federals claim is true,as Police Agencys across the Nation Are involved in Shootings. The 9mm is way under rated as it is but now maybe that will change.I was able to acquire a few boxes of the Plus P and my Glosk 17 liked the taste of them, and they shot from a rest very well.So 9mm lovers I believe I would give the new 130gr bullet a chance. When I use the term new I mean they have been on shelves a couple months, but the report from Federal is newly released.

Thanks, but I'll stick with my Corbon 115gr and 90gr +P's.

What HP type is this, a Hydra Shok? If this penetrates well and expands enough, this should be good news.

The latest statistics I saw gave the best 9mm defense ammo stopping power of 91% (Cor-Bon). If this new stuff can get to 94+%, they might have something. The best .45 ACP is 94% (Hydra-Shok). By comparison, .308 (rifle) is about 99%. 0 -
Gordian Blade:
Where did you see these statistics? I guess they're based on actual case studies of LE shootings? How does the 40S&W compare? I personally like the 155gr Hydra Shok, but I'm not LE and I've never had to shoot anybody. Thanks.
Appologies to rugster for mentioning 40S&W in a 9mm topic!

Hi metalcutter, I got the statistics from here:
http://www.powernet.net/~eich1/sp.html
The .40 S&W best is Cor-Bon, 96%.
What we are talking about here is the probability that a hit to center-of-mass (torso) will stop an attacker before he can do something significant, not necessarily kill him. (And conversely, the ones that didn't stop might eventually kill the person but not until he was able to do something significant.)
You can read the explanation of where these numbers came from at the bottom of the charts. Yes, they are based on actual shootings for the most part, but some of the numbers for the newer rounds are based on tests that have been correlated with actual shootings. I think the shootings include all that would meaningfully contribute to the database, not just LEO shootings.0 -
Talk about a collection of losers - Federal and 9MM in the same posting!!!

I myself dont care for the 9mm and refuse to carry one if i can have something more in the same size gun.I still like .357mag.But I watched a shw on the Navy Seals the other night on TLC and the instructor did have a valid point he said:"being a 9mm some people will say well its only a 9mm it wont do anything..BUT when I put two rounds through your heart and one through your head you won know the difference and neither will the enemy"So dont go disrepecting the 9mm too much.I dont have faith in my abilities as a shooter to be able to put 2 the heart and 1 to the head so I wont own one.But I dont want one popping me.Im 6'3 and 215 pounds so .357 recoil doesnt bother me but for smaller frame men and women I think its a logical choice. But if you like 9mm why not get a .357sig and be at the max for a 9mm bullet.

You know I was looking at some load data, and apparently the US military 9mm ball load itself is pretty hot. Alot hotter than most of the commercial loads I see. 124grfmj 1299fps/465e.
If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

465 muzzle energy is damn good for 9mm.Does the military do anything to heir FMJ rounds?Like prefragment or cut the jacket to mushroom.

Not from what I can see in my documentation. I looks like just plain FMJ. I think that they are intended to penetrating light body amror/frag vests.
