Impulse buy
I was looking for a 9mm pistol and saw a great offer on a S&W 317 kit gun. Just had to buy it and I picked it up yesterday. It is sweet! My two daughters love shooting their dads Ruger 10/22 and now they want to try "their new .22". God bless them!
Anyway, when I saw this I was looking for a 9mm pistol and would welcome input on the best kind. I want a full size one (not for carry) that I can take to the range most weeks (for fun not competition). On my list I have Glock, CZ, Sig... Price wise I am okay on the $500 dollar range. Any recommendations....

I have never owned a 9mm but my father has a Smith & Wesson 5906 9mm he used to carry as his duty weapon he recently swapped to a 4006 .40s&w.He has had it since the early 90's we have shot a minimum of 7500 rounds from that pistol and never had one malfunction.That is what caused him to stay S&W with the 4006.Its accurate,reliability is unquestioned and there are still a overload of Hi-Cap magazines to be had 15+1 is never a problem.From my experience with this gun It is up there with the best of them and would serve you right.But some will say Hi-ower or Glock for 9mm.But the Smith has been the best performer Ive seen.It would serve you well.And Da/Sa is another good point as opposed to the s/s on the high power and dao on the glock.Good Luck

Well, all I can say is get ready for a deluge of replies. I have a Sig P226 in 9mm and I love it. It's a great gun. Though I don't think you'll find even a gently used one for the $500 range. I paid $600 for mine in slightly used condition. Ruger makes nice durable guns for way less money. It all depends. Do you want a Cadillac or an old Chevy truck? Glocks are nice and function well, but they're ugly as hell.

Gravedigger has a good point on the SIG they are top quality guns.But maybe go with a .357SIG as opposed to the 9mmparabellum.From what I hear it is a super hot 9mm anyway so you might as well max it.

Thanks Guys, I must admit I could probably stretch to a bit more for a Sig. Ideally I want something I can put many rounds through it without fear of failure or damage. I thought about Ruger but am very tempted by the Sig... Too much choice in the world! Hadn't thought about the 357Sig though. Oh no more choice now!

No problem I love acting like i know something:) Glock makes a good .357 SIG in the Glock 32 and it can be had with factory porting and a 3.5 pound trigger pull now thats hot.But Im the type of guy that sticks with a paticualr brand for a paticular rou example:.40s&w-S&W,>357SIg-SIG,.480 ruger-Ruger But you get the idea.But that 3.5# pull is tempting to me.Another thing about .357Sig is it being a fairly new round compared to some old favorites ammo is still a little steep but that should die out aas it gains popularity.And Ive heard its a pain to re-load but dont know first hand.

Prior to considering a 357Sig look into the additional ammunition cost you will incur between 9mm and 357Sig.
Sounds like you basically want a new firearm for target practice for both yourself and daughters. With 9mm's you have a wide variety to select from. You mentioned a CZ75, good semi-automatic, good size and weight, and mauual safety.
Another selection you might want to consider is a Browning Hi-Power. If you take your time and research some you should be able to find a nice one in the $500/550.00 range. Would definitely pay the additional and get Browning Hi-Power, and not a clone.
Unless your daughters are familiar with handguns would be a little reluctant to go with a Glock at this time. Will always praise Sig's if they fit your budget.

You might consider me odd, but I love my S&W CS9. My wife and 9 year old son love it because of the smaller frame size. I bought it just to plink with. App. 5000 rounds through it with no problems at all using UMC ammo. With Wolf it jams occasionally. I would recommend one to anyone, and they can be had for $200-$300 (used) in excellent conditon around here. 0 -
No one mentioned the Beretta. I have one and it's been great since day one. Plenty of hi-caps around too.
Without the NRA, the second ammendment would already be gone!

I cannot believe that everyone here is silent on Ruger!!! An American icon that really works and is worth the $
I have a KP89 and a MKll slabside target and they are 100% functional and also low cost pistols.
Read the "propaganda" on the P series and believe it or not it is all TRUE!!!
It may not have the cache of a Sig or an over priced Browning (assembled in Portugal no less) but this pistol is one that you can bet your life on! You can dress it up wit after market grips but you don't have to do a "trigger job" on it to get satisfactory groups.
Too many "snobs" out there in love w/Sigs, CZ's and Brownings!!!0 -
hey seb, you can't put cz in the same "price class" as a sig or browning. i own both a ruger p95dc & cz 75. i actually paid more for my ruger. the ruger is a good pistol, but the cz is quite a bit better as far as accuracy, feel, and construction. i have never had any problem with either pistol! 0 -
I've been seeing sig 229 in 40 cal. Law enforcement factory rebuilds for $500.00. Carry the same warrenty as a new gun. I think this is a great choice for $500.00. Just my two cents. 0 -
I have a Ruger P-94 in 9mm. about 2000 rounds through it without a single problem. Put a set of Hogue Wraparounds on it and has an even better feel. No problem with the accuracy either. 0 -
Thanks for all the great feedback everyone. It looks like I will have to go to the local range and hire some of the guns recommended to see which one feels the best. What a great way to spend an evening or afternoon!

I don know if its more being "snobs" as having more to do with appreciating guns made to a higher level of quality.I know for me personally when someone asks me about high end firearms Ruger is not what comes to my mind.If someone asks me what gun to get for $350.00 I will say a Ruger and I like the P97 but you wouldnt catch me giving up a Sig or HK for a ruger but thats just me.

Should be able to find a "gently" use one for $500 or a little more.
You'll find it to be as dependable and accurate as anything out there.
67+ years of manufacture and carried by the military in more countries than I could list.
You'll be happy!

Look into a Witness full size. Excellent gun for the money for around $400 NIB. If you got the money, try out the Sig 226 or Hi Power. Lots of hi-caps floating around still at decent prices. The 226 and HP are two of the finest 9mm's out there. If you are just plinking, stay with the 9mm. I think the only ammo cheaper is the 22lr. GD 0 -
