Problem with rust?
I have yet another question for the vast collective knowledge here.I recently traded my Kel-Tec P40 to my father for a Rossi 971 .357magnum(believe it or not it was a good trade,I love this revolver)He took it to a gunsmith and discovered the problem with the launch back of powder was due to handloads someone at work had given him.My love for the Rossi, the fact that Ive been shooting that same gun since I was a kid and the fact he just started carrying a S & W 4006 as his duty weapon made the trade. He had to go to the range and qualify with it to carry it as his back up piece.Well he left it in his trunk for one night and we had a severe rain storm and he had a bad trunk seal he didnt know about. So the top of the slide rusted. He wiped it down and has been keeping oil on it but it slowly starts coming back.I s there anything that can be done to remedy this or should he have the slide re-blued.I have taken the gun apart and the slide is the only affected area but I can see that its starting to seep in around the edges of the rear site so something has to be done quick. The humidity down here will just make it that much worse that much faster. So re-blue or any products out there that will remove the rust and keep it removed? Thanks Again

Try soaking the slide overnight in Kroil brand penatrating oil (it also makes a good cleaner for your barrel). You might have to power buff the area with a EXTRA SOFT wire brush, followed by some touch-up blue.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Let it soak in Break Free overnight! I had the same problem once . 0 -
I agree with the Break Free CLP it is amazing at eating away rust.I would try it a couple of times.I have seen it do some pretty amazing things.Best of luck!!
Happy Fourth!!

Give the Break Free a try prior to trying the Kroil.

After 1 night it got rust? Sounds too fast to me. Usually takes longer for rust to form that would be visible to the naked eye.
When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....0 -
I will tell him to try the break free,It wasnt even a whole day it was about 7 hours of rain. The rust is very visible it has started to bubble the bluing off about mid-slide the rest almost wipes completely off with a rag but there is still a thin coat left.I was looking for a cheaper alternative cause the gunsmith here in town wanted 100.00 to reblue just the slide.I felt that too steep so I told him what to kiss Id do it myself. Thanks for even more quality advice. But yes it was just a few hours and rusted. But it was fading when I got it some so that might have sped it up some. And we have some strangely acidic rain here so that might have played a role too.

Does anyone know how to get CorrosionX?
That might at least halt the rust for you. personally, i ma just looking for a retailer near me, instead of paying 5 bucks shipping for a 5 dollar tube of stuff.

(sig about Clinton's talk show changed, though I thought it was pretty creative without overt vulgarity)0 -
Being a pro mechanic, I get to try everything, one product that has never let me down is PB Blaster, makes a believer out of everyone that tries it. 0 -
I have had very good results with Birchwood-Casey Sheath. I
prefer the liquid, not the spray can. Works great on my guns.
Don't send flowers when I die. Send money now, I can buy more ammo.0
