What Type Ammo Not To Use For Mini-14
Ok, I bought my new toy, a preban stainless Mini-14. Have a lot of Remington .223 on hand but want to do a bit more shooting that is affordable. What should I stay away from in the foreign made ammo such as Wolf, surplus, etc.? Just going to shoot paper and plink.

Well, you've got one started! Sit back and watch the fur fly!
(my mini-30 gobbles Wolf with no problem whatsoever, and at a buck fifty a box, it's never hungry!)
Nothing very, very good or very, very bad lasts for very, very long.0 -
I'll be interested to see where this goes. I also have the same SS pre-ban mini. Then I brought home a AC 556 2 weeks ago and now I am out of ammo! Great rifle.

Thanks for the info. I guess my local gun dealer was correct when he said you can feed the Mini-14 anything but oatmeal.

Don't know about the mini 14, but I had a couple of AR's that
would not shoot the Chinese stuff, Norinco I think.
Don't send flowers when I die. Send money now, I can buy more ammo.0 -
I've known of people who have had problems with the Wolf .223. Apparently, the lacquer coating is somewhat melted by the heat of firing a round and can build up in the barrel. This hasn't been a problem in a larger bore firearm, such as 7.62 caliber, but with the small diameter of a .223 barrel it can be a major problem. I've heard of several instances of ruined barrels. Just to be safe, I stay away from Wolf when I'm looking for ammo for the AR-25 or the Mini-14.
I've had good luck with the South African surplus that's floating around for around $35.00 - $40.00 for 300 round battle packs.0 -
Let me build on Austin247s comment about the laquered Wolf ammo...
I use it in an AK and my Mini-30 with no problems but three times in two different Mini-14s I've had major problems. Twice my ejector has ripped the rim off the casing with Wolf in a Mini-14. Wolf is good-cheap plinking ammo, it just doesn't agree with Mini-14s.0 -
Thanks for the info guys. I'm going with the S&B.

Let me make my smart a__ remark for today and get it over with.
Teach your wife/girlfriend to reload..HA HA HA
Sorry few years back an old blue mini14 with all wood stock came to live with me it was the "TOY" for a while. Put a Nikon scope on it and began working up reloads. I know everbody shoots one hole groups when nobodys around to see it, but feed right that old dog would hunt and did.
Critters around here still tell stories about.
Shot very little factory, but remember the winchester was good.0 -
I have found wolf or Rem UMC at $3.50 a box to shoot great at a low cost price. The only fallback with wolf is that you cant reload it but at their price I cat reload it for that.

My mini's eat anything, even Wolf. I had one bad batch of Wolf a few months ago, otherwise, they are okay, and you can't beat the price. Gd 0
