    Actually it's a 7.62x54R (R for rimmed shell).
I haven't seen one yet that can do better than 3" at 100 yds, so at 250 yds, the deer need not worry about his eyes. The m-44 is a good hunting rifle, the ammo cheap, but it will kick your shoulder back to yesterday!
Stick with 100/150 yd shots and it will perform o.k.
As for the price- in good condition- brite bore- $80.00 to $120.00 with matching numbers.

Mosin/Nagant M44 never been sniper rifle, but it is identical to M39 and M38 with bayonet added. M38 and M39 used as sniper rifle. Mosin/Nagant usually are very accurate rifle and definitely could be used as hunting rifle. I have very good results 100 and 200 yards, I am a not marksman. If rifle is in excellent condition with Russian scope it value $150 or more.

One point that's missing is this: A M44 is pretty damn heavy. Mope weight than I'd want to lug around the woods.

You want to talk heavy my grandpa used to let me take a old spanish double barrel 10 gauge into the woods. Now that joker was heavy it had to be atleast 15 pounds.Id have to sit and rest after about 4 miles just to keep from sweating and giving myself away. But man it would drop em.A turkey would be a full inch shorter when I let that thing off.

Methinks thou doest protest too much. The weight & recoil are about the same as most other military rifles of the period. If you think it is heavy you have obviously never carried an M-1.
I think the price is a little high but it depends on how much ammo is in that case. I can get the basic rifle (M-44) for $49 when it goes on sale & $59 anytime. The basic design can be very accurate & has been used by many Russian Olympic shooters.
Your other post would seem to imply there may 760 rounds with the rifle. If that is so this would be an outstanding bargin.
