It seems like you are getting a gun from an estate. There are some special provisions for such a gun if it is an item that is being "inherited" by you from that estate.

If you are buying it from an estate, there shouldn't be any particular problems. Let me suggest this. Go to a Class III dealer and lay out the entire issue to him. He will be able to completely advise or find out the proper answers and make the transfer for you. It would be worth the amount he might charge. Generally, a Class III dealer doesn't rip you off.......too bad. Good Luck!

paul, thanks for the help. i started this journey at my local class 3 dealer's shop. he told me that he'd charge me $100.00 for the transfer which sounds fair to me, but he also acted like i was wasting his very valueable time as was the only one in his shop at the time. i don't mind spending $100.00 or ever more, but i'm not going to do business were i don't feel welcome. i also run my own small business and enjoy a little success, because the custome is KING in my eyes. "sorry for the rant"
i'm guessing that the thompson is well worth the asking price of $2000.00 based on what you've said.

    Dawg,
As you live in the state of BATF shoot them a letter.
SCJ Drag Pak Paul gave good advise. If you hold a "C@R"
perhaps easier. I would definetely pursue the Thompson, with all legal
means. Forget the AK-47-junk. Even while in Asia, the AK
was a killer piece of junk. Go for the Thompson, while obeying all laws.

While it would be worth $100 to me to have a dealer help me with the process, I agree that it is a mistake to deal with someone who acts like he is annoyed by your presence. However, you should have no problem doing the transfer by yourself. State and local laws are IN ADDITION to federal laws; check out the Georgia requirements in State Laws and Published Ordinances-Firearms (ATF P5300.5).

Without a description of the model, condition, and originality, no one can guess how much this Thompson is worth. Sight unseen, my SWAG is that it is in the $5,000-10,000 range. For $2,000, you can't go wrong.

It must remain in the possession of the administrator of the estate until you complete the transfer.

CONGRATS, YOU GOT A HELL OF A DEAL!
ONCE YOU HAVE THE CLEO SIGN OFF, AND THE PAPERWORK IS MAILED TO ATF, EXPECT FROM 10 WEEKS TO 6 MONTHS FOR YOUR PAPERWORK TO GET BACK TO YOUR CLASS 3 DLR.
MOST CLASS 3'S CHARGE $50 TRANSFER.
YOUR DEALER MAY BE PO'D THAT HE DID NOT FIND IT FIRST, & POSSIBLY
LOST APX $6,000 TO $8,000 PROFIT.

    ENJOY WALTER
