Is the Rem. 788 trigger adjustable?

I have looked at it breifly, but I can't determine any adjustments. I would like to get it down from the horrible, guestimated 7lb pull if at all possible. If I can't adjust it, does anyone know if there are aftermarket triggers available?

  JustC,
  It's not. I looked in my Brownell catalog and don't find any adjustable ones listed there.
  You could try calling, or going on their websites. Timney or Dayton Traister.
  The other alternative is to find out from a good gunsmith if it could be honed or touched up.

  JustC, The old "file and hone" method is the only way I know of. One stroke too many and you can order another 788 trigger assembly!! It can be done but is not recomended for the average basement gunsmith!! I'm one of those above average basement gunsmiths but I wouldn't touch one that belonged to someone else!! GHD

  Thanks guys. I didn't want to put any money in the gun, but it looks as though I will be calling the gunsmith,......that is unless I go ahead and spend for the 700 vssf in 220 swift. Been wantin' one of those little beauties. The 788 in 222 is giving me a FINE group, but want the reach out ability.

  Had a Canjar adjustable trigger for a 788 about a year ago. A fine trigger on a fast lock time-great shooting-inexpensive rifle.

  i've done many trigger jobs on 788's and the easy way is to replace the trigger spring with a lighter one. if you have a spring assortment you can try several different weights. just donen't try to get it too light. two lbs is about all you can get and still be safe. it is not advisable to cut the original spring as the spring itself is to heavey.

  brownell's has spring asst. the trick is to find a spring with the same approx. o.d. but with a lighter weight. as a gunsmith i've probably got 30 lbs of asst. springs so finding one that works isn't that hard.

  Mike Whiskey, I don't suppose you have one around for sale? I would imagine that I could switch them out myself with little effort, as I am fairly mechanicaly inclined. Are there any parts I can polish, (slightly, just to be safe)?

  I COULD SEND A SPRING BUT I DON'Y HAVE A 788 IN THE SHOP RIGHT NOW, YOU CAN POLISH THE ENGUAGING SURFACES OF THE TRIGGER AND SEAR BUT DON'T CHANGE THE ANGLES. E-MAIL ME AT MERRILLSMW@AOL IF YOU WANT TO SEND ME YOUR SPRING FOR COMPARISON.
