Question on operation of Smith model 39

The lever is called (by most people) a "hammer drop." It's common on most S&W pistols and its function is to safely let the hammer down without a discharge. Leaving the lever down also disables the gun so you could say it's a "safety" too.

Go to http://www.smith-wesson.com/helpdesk/index.html and get a manual.

That's the way these are supposed to work. The loading instructions in the manual for my S&W 39 says to put the safety on, put in a magazine, rack the slide and let the hammer drop on it's own. To shoot: take off the safety, first shot is DA and SA for the rest unless you use the safety/hammer dropper to go back to DA. Seemed goofy to me at first being used to SA auto loaders but makes sense after some use. Not an expert here, just relaying what it says on the paperwork that came with my 39.
