It has less powder than a 10mm, it's not necked down. Has nice balistics, and performs well. Stronger than the 9mm with less recoil than 45.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

The .40 caliber hand gun is the single most popular caliber among LEO. And has proven to be a fine defense gun.

I tried one .40 cal., in a Glock, could not hit the ground three times in a row with it. My Glocks in 9mm & 45 have all shot great.

Have friends using .40's in Bretta's they seem very accurate, also H&K have rep for being real shooters.
These are only my thoughts.........for what their worth.

The 40S&W is a shortened 10mm. Same dia. less powder as JustC said. I have a Beretta chambered for it and I love it. It kicks more than a 9mm, but after your first 1000 rounds you won't notice it. The local Sheffif's dept. switched to the 40 after some disappointing results with the 9mm. And, yes the officers did hit their intended targets!

I have a small Glock 23 in 40 and it's very accurate, easy to shoot, and the recoil is not really any more than a 9mm.

For a self-defense caliber, it's just fine. I don't think it's quite won the shooting world for target, competition and pure recreational shooting in the same way as other calibers.

The .40s&w has a shorter case and less powder than a 10mm.I bought a Kel-Tec P40 and it was ok a little off in the accuracy aspect but fed everthing.I would much rather have a .40 over a 9mm.The .40 is a strong caliber though that many cops cant be wronge. If they trust it I guess I do to.They are alot more likely to be shot at than I am and they have faith in it.I would say two center of mass shots would take the fight out of most people. You can rest easy and know yor caliber choice wont let you down.Thats my opinion on the matter atleast.Good Luck.

Also my Kel-Tec is a small and very light gun and I found it very contollable. It shoots the same as my dads 5906 9mm which is much larger and heavier. It shot the same to me anyway but nowhere near as accurate.
