    Hello ,
First , make sure it UNLOADED , remove upper half ( slide ) , remove grips , punch out pin - remove (slide down) main spring housing ...
place in padded jaws of vice , push down on plunger and push out small
retainer pin , take plunger and spring and replace into new housing...
when replacing housing into gun , make sure that the flat (trigger-
sear spring) is properly in place...you should be o.k. , its simple...
if you need any help , let us know..................

Thanks for the help. I was able to do it, even though I don't have a vise. The first time, the spring went flying, but the next time, I was ready for it and managed to keep the mainspring depressed with an allen wrench while I slid the retaining pin in. I put it all back together and it works!
    Thanks again azgunnut!

It flew because the hammer wasn't forward. Let the hammer down before removing or installing the pin.

The NRA sells a reprint of articles on the M1911/M1911A1; it's well worth the $3-4 that it costs.
