Pitting inside barrell
Any way to get a small amount od pitting out of the inside of a barrel. Also what problems could this pitting cause? It is on the inside of a 12 ga barrell.

No way to remove pitting, other than grinding away the surrounding steel so that it reaches the level of the bottom of the pits. Pitting is the absence of steel, caused by rust/corrosion. It is caused by rust or corrosion, which in turn are caused by moisture or corrosive primers and/or powder.
To prevent pitting, keep guns clean, dry, and oiled. Modern ammunition is less corrosive than that used many years ago, so cleaning is not as urgent.

Gun is 87 years old

i was going to recommend back boreing until i hit the 87 years old part, if the pitting is not vey deep and you have good steel barrels (not twist steel) it probably is safe with lighter loads. even so i would have a gunsmith check it to be sure. the pitting will not effect the shooting much, if might open up the shot pattern. 0 -
I dont know, would shooting a gun with a little piting in the bore hurt you or the gun, i'm talking shotgun? 0 -
A little pitting won't hurt the accuracy of a gun, especially an unrifled shotgun bore.
I wouldn't be too concerned about it.
You could replace the barrel but it's really not worth it.0 -
There is a hone made up of a bunch of small abrasive balls on wires mounted on a shaft. When mounted in an electric drill ,centrifugal force moves them outward. The hone is worked along the bore and good results are claimed in removing small pits. Talk to a gunsmith. 0 -
there is no cure. If you abrade it by firing lapping coated pills, you will increase the dia of the grooves and lands, and will make less of a gas seal. You can be happy with what you have, or have it rebarreled.
WHOOPS, missed that part about it being a shotgun[B)] Just shoot it as long as it hasn't corroded away enough to become weak and unsafe, but that would take a LOT of corrosion. It is a smoothbore, we aren't talking benchrest here,...just a tube to blow a shot pattern through. MHO0 -

Huh[?] We are talking about a smooth bore shotgun. I am with V35 on this. Shotgun barrels can be honed (with the device mentioned) if the pitting is not too terribly deep.0 -
Since most modern loads are contained in a plastic wad/shot cup, I wouldn't worry about it either. As long as the gun is safe to shoot, anyway-that is. It will likely just build up plastic fouling a little quicker. 0 -
I wouldn't sweat it much. Bore condition to collectors doesn't mean much anyway and at 87 hunting seasons, it's time the old boy got a rest from field trips.
If it really bothers you, just have it sleeved to the next smaller guage.0
