6.5mm-06
What is your opinion of this cartridge, mostly in regard to accuracy. What about twist rate??? Any handloading tips, or problems? THX HAWKSHAW

Anybody got some dope on the 6.5mm-06? I've heard a lot about the terminal bllistics of the 6.5mm bullets (I'm supposing it's because of the long heavy bullets with high ballistic coefficients available in this caliber but I'm not sure.) I'm thinking of rebarreling a sporterized 03 Springfield to this caliber. I'd love to read some knowledgable thoughts on this.

Varmint Hunter magazine has a article on it.Will see what I can dig up. The 6.5x.284 and the 6.5x3006 are kicking in long range shooting. The Berger VLD bullets are really making these rounds standouts.

I food the article in Varmint Hunter. It is four pages long. Very complete. The Arthur talks about building the rifle, Load development, And testing. He then talks about the rifles performance on several hunts.
He tells about it's performance on everything , From ground hogs at 1000yrds, To both mule deer and prong horn hunting. He has my interest focused on this round.

The 6.5x06 is a poor mans 264 Win Mag. It's my pet round. Very near 264 mag speed using less powder and non-belted cases. Using less powder increases barrel life to the point that a normal shooter or hunter would not ever need replace barrel. Good for everything up too and including deer. I own two built on Ruger 77 receivers and both are flat shooting, fast, and deadly accurate. My personal opinion is that you'll love the round. 0 -
I shoot the 6.5-06 and really like it. It is the best long range varmint and deer round I've found. A-Square rifles standardized it with SAAMI several years ago and produces some very nice brass with the factory headstamp ( no resizing). They can be reached at (502) 255-3021. There is also a good section in their book on loads and cartridge history. The Varmint Hunter article was a very good reference. 0 -
I can see advantages like using a short action. And match quality bullets are available. But is there much difference in velocity or trajectory over a .270? 0 -
Great terminal ballistics. Shot two deer couple years ago, back to back. Dropped them in their tracks like their legs were knocked out from under them.
Compared to the good ole .270 Win, it has higher performance values, and the 6.5 (.264 cal) bullet has a better Sectional Density for penetration.
Nasty cartridge.

I have a 6.5-06 improved, which is doing well so far, but I am still trying to find that perfect recipe. Hopes are high. Do some research on the balistics with a 142gr sierra.
