why are the sniper rifles mostly .308 cal.? was it the availability of ammo or was that the most accurate cal. of the time. i've not been in the service, so i don't know if i missed something. i know there has to be a logical reason for the caliber as there has been more accurate calibers made for quite some time. i am just curious.

quote: I would like a larger caliber rifle (>308) that is capable of shooting 1000 yds accuartly with enough retained energy.

Enough retained energy? How big of snipes are you planning on hunting?

    just kidding - btt

Its hard to beat a good AR style chambered for the .308 thats why most police sniper rifles are chambered for the .308.With 168gr Black hills ammo I wouldnt want anyone on our force qualified to do so shoot at me at 500yds.I think 1000yds is not a sniper rifle, its a throw a rock at a bird on the window pane and hope not to hit the window.

dooley:I have a long range High Power Match rifle that will shoot 1000yds. I have shot it in compition and done very well. It is chambered in 30-06. Its all ready to go, nothing else is needed. It has redfield palma match rear peep sight, frot globe sight and scope bases. Questions E-mail 0neshot@nnex.net

.300 win mag.Plenty of punch, Longer barrel life. Holds the new 1000 yard record. Not near as expensive as the exotics.

Varmint hunter makes a great point, (although I think he is partial to the caliber since his won a 600yd match)

If you wish to shoot the 338 lapua, I would suggest you do so before you build one of your own. You may be suprised at the recoil. They are stout, to say the least. If you make the gun heavy enough to absorb the recoil, it won't be considered a sniper employable weapon any longer.

The 308, 30-06, 300wm, 300UM, even a 7mm mag are good performers at 1000 yds. Energy requirements are debatable, due to the fact that animlas shouldn't be shot at, at 1000yds. If you do, I suggest you be one of the best shots in the country, in the interest of ethics.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

Even though the 7mm mag is smaller than the big 30's I would recomend it because the round retains its energy at longer distances better than the above calibers... also a very flat shooting round.. considered a large enough caliber for any game in North America.

lets all be responsible! shoot a criminal! Remember 0% of firearms pull there own trigger!

Rem 700 P in 300 WIN Mag is the best and most logical rifle at this instant for USGI sniping.
If you are talking USLEO then the 308 is by far the wisest choice.
Please show me a SINGLE example of a 400 meter shot from a USLEO TAC or SNIPER????

I like the old 300 H&H mag. Kicks like a mule though!

the .308 is a fine cartridge to use and will easily take down a target at up to if not greater than 1,00 yards. the M40A1 used by the Marine Corps can hold tight groups at 1,00 yards and i trust them to do so. that is what we use on our Special Reaction Team on our base and so does our scout/sniper platoons here on base also and if the right person is behind the weapon you wont have to worry about the window even getting scratched!
