A 7mm mag is a 270 with a bullet that weights 30 grs. more. Velocity and trajectory are very close. Use the 7mm mag on both. Use the money for a great scope.

I have a remington model 721 in 270 and it works great for deer and elk. The 7mm is also a great gun for both. A lot of people will tell you that you need something bigger for elk but it is all in bullet placement not the size.

There is not a thing wrong with hunting whitetails,or antelope with a 270.As shot placement and range are limited. You might be picked at a bit at camp if you take a 270 on an Elk hunt. And no I am not saying you cant kill an elk with a 270, but a 130gr bullet can only do so much. Go with the 7mm mag you have alot more range, and you can surely take most any North American game. You may even consider going with one of the 7mm ultra magnums. I have a 7mm mag and the 7mm ultra mag. But I like the 7mm mag and I can shoot it much better, due to recoil but alot of people are going to the ultra mag calibers.

    Good Luck and Happy Hunting.

If you are comfortable with the 7 and it is an accurate gun, it will handle both duties with no problem
    BUT
If your trying to justify to your wife the need for another rifle, then you abosolutly need a 270 for deer...........

If you already have the 7mm mag, and you don't just "want" another rifle, keep it. It serves me extremely well on whitetail both in the woods and over the fields. It is a very versatile caliber, which will do the whole North American continent. The fast and flat trajectory will even eliminate some of the holdover which is required for longer shots in non-magnum calibers. It's one of my personal favorites, but that's just me.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.
