no gunpowder
I recently bought a Shotgun News for the first time in years and they had an advertisement on the front page for some ".22 super colibri" 22 shells and it says "no gunpowder". Is this something new? It says "500 fps" so I assume the cap gives it some velocity. Are they used for target practice or some such? Just curious.

They are very quiet. Some use them for in town pest removal like a pellet gun. Others use them in doors for practice. There are a variety of purposes for them. They are about as load as a good hand clap.
They are still dangerous though. I know a guy that actually killed something pretty good sized with one. He was just trying to scare it away and he accidently killed it. I'm not going to mention what he killed because no one would believe it. I wouldn't have either, but the look on this guy's face let me know he was scared. I thought he was going to start a law suit over this. I had told him that these rounds probably wouldn't even break the skin of the animal in question and here a week later he's afraid his neighbor is going to turn him in for poaching.0 -
I believe they are made by Aquila. They are designed for very quiet target practice. Mostly from a .22 cal six shooter. There is a warning to check a rifle barrel, if fired from a rifle, to make sure they have left the barrel. They sound like a finger snapping. At extremely close range, they can kill a small animal. 0 -
If I am not mistaken these were desighned for a hand gun not a rifle as there is good possibility they will not be forced through longer barrel. I think they are fired by the primer alone and I would advise anyone using them not to fire them in a rifle. And use great care as they all seem to have different velocities One may have a low charge and the other same lot may come out of the barre smoking.Just like one of the gentlemen mentioned.

I tried them out in my Ruger 22/45 and to me they were just a novelty. I guess you could use them on pests but I was just trying them out for fun. They are not very accurate at all after you get out past 20-25 feet. Extremely quiet, but obviously not much power. I was shooting them into a milk jug filled with water at about 7-8 yards, they would penetrate the jug but would just sink into the water. They weren't powerful enough to go out the back end. Best when used with revolvers as they won't cycle a semi-auto.

They also will NOT function an autoloader properly. They are designed specfically for use in revolvers of single shot handguns,

When I heard about this ammo, I bought a brick of it. I got a .22 bullet trap and do target practice in the basement, shooting the ammo with a Colt Trooper .22LR. It's good fun; at about 30' it'll punch through empty spray cans. After I sealed my deck, the square 1 gallon cans that the sealer came in made good targets too but the bullets end up IN the cans, they don't go all the way through. If I remember correctly, they also go through about 400 pages of a phone book at that distance too.

Hmmm ...Are these things like the old CB caps? 22 shorts without any power in the case ...using only the primer charge as a propellant? ...Mark
