The gunsmith is correct...Have you got the Follower turned around? Under NO circumstance cut the spring...Whatever the problem...its gonna be something rediculous...Drag it [the gun] over to your Gunsmith and let Him have a Looksee...Won't hurt anything and the Monkey is on His back...Best...

Thanks for the quick response Captain! That better not be the problem; if it is, I'll just kick myself and blush for a little bit, then go shoot it.

Still on the subject, will this style action have any harm on the extractor claw by manually placing the cartridge in the chamber and closing the bolt, rather than letting it lift up from the internal mag box?

It's easest to get a "bench rest follower" (sits on top of the stock follower, and has a trough you lay the round into) available at Midway. (PN 745-830 $12.49)
Second easiest is to feed from the magazine.
If you insist on dropping the shell into the chamber before closing the bolt you should, with the fingers of your left hand, press the extracter extention to the bolt body as you close the bolt. They can be very stiff, but if you try it with the bolt out of the rifle you will see whats happining up at the extractor claw.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

It sounds to me that you might be happier with a slam fire Remington or a post 64 Winchesyter. They love loose rounds.

With the MAUSER Action you can't feed a Cartridge into the Chamber and close the Bolt...The Bolt is made to strip the Round from the Magazine and allow the Rim of the Cartridge to slide up into the Bolt Face and then into the Chamber with the Extractor over the rim.....Best...

Every army that issued the M-98 trained their solders on how close the bolt over a round in the chamber, only in the US is the magazine only MYTH alive and well. A gunsmith can modify the extractor to slip over a chambered round but in doing so, you lose some of the inherent strength of the mauser design.

I put in a 3 leaf and it worked fine. Only two cartridges fit in the mag.
