My stock 1991A1 also handled HPs right out of the box. However, this was not always the case with 1911s made by Colt or some other manufacturers, which was why gunsmiths used to prosper doing throat and polish jobs. Colt lost such a large share of the 1911 market that they brought in a custom gunsmith to show them what they were not doing. The result is a much improved product, and the appropriate amount of attention has been paid to the feed ramp and throat areas. I believe you will find that Kimber, Baer, Wilson, Brown, and the other high end makers perform with HPs when received. I'll also wager that some of the lower end 1911s still require throat and polish jobs to function satisfactorily. The current Colts are a very good product-in some ways the best they have made.

A Colt M1911A1 is a military pistol, and many will not feed hollow points. I wonder if Rugster means he has a military pistol when he says he has a M1911A1, or does he mean he has a commercial Government Model? His question then mentions only the M1991A1, so I am not sure just how to answer.

Government Models from the early day (Pre-War and early Post-War) were set up for hardball only, just like the military pistols, but Colt Government Model pistols built in the last 20 years or so are throated and should feed hollow points reliably. I might add that the Remington 185-grain JHP bullet is shaped like hardball so it feeds better than many other hollow points.

To me, the reliability standard has always been whether the pistol will feed empty cases mixed in with live rounds. That is also a good way to check for flinch.
