Hammer Forged Barrel

hammer forging is a process which strengthens steel, I am not sure how, you need to ask a metalurgist or someone with experience. The Remington Sendero has a hammer forged barrel which is a large part of it's accuracy, as well as stock and trigger.

When a barrel is threaded for a suppressor, it is threaded on the exterior circumference of the barrel so that the suppressor screws on. There is no work done on the rifling as this would deteriorate accuracy. Just picture a nozzle being screwed on to a garden hose.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

Hammer forged barrels are first drilled then a rod with the shape of the rifling engraved on it is inserted. The hammer forge machine has multiple hammers that beat on the outside of the barrel forcing the previously drilled hole to close in on the rod and take the shape of the rifling. It is a cold forming process resulting in a very smooth bore. Grain formation in the steel follows the contours of the rifling in contrast with cut rifling where metal is cut away and the grain flow is discontinuous. Barrels formed by this process should have superior mechanical properties.

Steyr has been making hammer forged barrels for 40 years or more, they (Steyr) are who other makers of hammer forged barrels compare themselves to ...

The only bad thing about choosing a Kimber ...
... there are so darn many models to choose from!

For v35. Thanks for the information, but wondering about removal of the "mandrell" (sp) or piece used to imprint lands and grooves. Does it just turn out as in removing a screw ?
Also, is the final outside barrel contour impressed by the hammer mill, or is this accomplished by another process.

    Thanks for your help. 11thcanopy

Caliber mandrel is removed by screwing out. This cleans-final forms the bore groves and lands. A finish reamer can be used to enhance dimensions, and impart smoother surfaces for accuracy, and higher velocity.
Final profile is done via lathe/CNC.

    Happy Bullet Holes!
