Actually, Saxon, the H&K is a CETME clone. The CETME came first.

Most of the CETMEs available are Century Intl Arms guns that are put together with wecsog attitude. The gun itself is very dependable with the design dating back to late WWII.

Unfortunately, CIA is not so dependable. If you got a good one,you got a good one; if you got a bad one you keep sending it back til you get a good one. Eventually they will get it right or replace it.

I have a CETME and love it. the trigger was absolutely horrid when I got it and it is a bit of a pain to get sighted in. If you plan on reloading for it think again. the fluted chamber will destroy your brass if you can find it.

    Grizz,

go over to HK91.com and hkpro.com for many, many post on these CETME's.

Most love them if they are working properly. Some have had poorly made ones and had trouble.

As I see it you've got a couple of things to consider:

1 CIA has made a ton of these things, and they've likely got the whole clone-receiver problem figured out, so hopefully you won't have the same problems that so many others have.

2 CIA has made a ton of these things, and they COULD be using up the last of the surplus parts, maybe the lesser-quality parts that didn't go into the first few thousand rifles.

3 CIA has a pretty good reputation for continuing to try to fix them, until either it works well, you accept it as is, or you give up and sell it at the next gun show.

4 Worst case, you spend the $300, plus shipping and FFL, maybe $350, and you're un-happy. You should be able to re-coup all of that at the next show.

If you go for it please keep us informed.

    Regards, Brisco

ps. I've just ordered the newest Century Arms G3 (RI1095x), built with new HK parts and Century's new stamped receiver that is supposed to be identical to the HK.
