The Colt Detective Special is the one that I would opt for, as I own a 1st issue one, have had the Smith , but the grips were a bit to small for my hand. I know, I could have changed the grips but I prefer to keep factory and all original.

It really depends on what feels good in your hands. I have both a DS and an old S&W 60....The Colt fits my hand better.

Colt Detective Special. You get that extra shot also.

Colt Detective special. Sixth shot and better trigger and better accuracy.

Smith & Wesson model 642 airweight. Great carry gun, stainless steel and alloy, nothing to rust when you carry it in the summer and sweat!

For a concealed carry weapon, I sure love my S&W airweight with the shrouded hammer. It can be carried unobtrusively in a pocket w/o fear of snagging at just the wrong moment. Replaced the grips - Pachmyer (sp) - and it is one of the sweetest shooting firearms inside of 15 yards I've ever owned. It's just my bias, but I've always preferred Smiths to Colts.

I have the Model 60 Chief's Special. I don't think I've mastered it quite yet, but I love it. There's a real good choice of grips and presently, there's no issues regarding parts or repairs should you need them. I also find it is capable of very good accuracy for CQB shooting.

My vote goes for the J-Frame. Have both and like the Smith better.
