1911 magazines?
Can anyone give me some advise about after market magazines for my Colt .45 1991A1? I recently had a bad experience trying an unknown make, they were completely useless. What is the best? What should I avoid? Why? , or should I go with factory Colt magazines? Do the factory Colt 8 rd mags work as well as the 7 rd? Are there any advantages stainless has over blued? What does drop free mean? Any help would be appreciated.

I can tell you for sure on that one, Chip Mckmormit, or Wilson combat That is the two most popular I see at shooting matches. And neither one has ever failed me.

I've ordered twice from James Dunn, M1911PARTS@aol.com. Do not know the make but have always functioned flawlessly. Want to say 4ea Blue 7rd magazines go for $20.00 or $25.00.

If you want a good magazine, get Wilson Combat. There are others, some good or equal, but these are industry standard and the ones chosen by the FBI and most serious shooters.

This is old but there was a co. that marked them Laka.
They were very good.
The ones I use now are McCormick and Wilson.
I will always pick Wilson cause Of AR and BOSS 302s

I have been using WWII surplus military magazines (have the mil spec assy numbers on the bottom) for several years now. They work perfect. Found a handfull at a gunshow...still wrapped in the original wrappers. If I recall, I paid $5 each for them. 0 -
I have a couple of Wilsons and are very satisfied with them. I also have over a dozen Chip McCormick Shooting Star Mags. They have also been excellent.
Guns only have two enemies: Rust and Liberals....0 -

Rafter-S, I guess you and I are the only tightwads here, but I bought a whole bunch of GI mags back in the '60s when you could get 'em for a coupla bucks each....and I've never had one malfunction or fail to feed in any of my 1911's. 0 -
Xracer: Another tightwad here still prefers the G.I. mags. I have
Devel, Wilson, Shooting Star Etc. BUT still keep the old G.I. mags
in my "house gun". G.I. mags seem to hold the slide open on last
shot best, drop free best, and ARE CHEAPER. Sure, you have to drill
and tap for bumpers, but my time comes free. To me, maybe I am wrong,
"drop free" means that when you hit the mag release button it falls
out without pulling it out, saving time in reloading. Trigger bow
fit is fairly critical for "drop free" along with a good mag release.
A beveled mag well, even the "el-cheapo" plastic also saves mag lip
damage and can be installed in minutes.0 -
