The new .480 Ruger is an excellant cartridge. And the Super Redhawk is a strong handgun. That would be my first pick over a .44 mag. The .454 is a good cartridge but I dont like the recoil. I shoot the others better.

    Good Luck.

Desert Eagle in 50AE would be more than sufficient for a 100yd shot. Mine groups very well and has less recoil than a 44mag revolver. With the 10" barrel (can be ordered that way) it will group @2" around 30-40 yds. The 44mag DE will recoil less tha a 357 with a 6" barrel.

However, if you are sold on a revolver, I also like the Super Redhawk. They are super guns for the money, accurate, and the triggers can be worked to smooth and reduce pull. The 454 is very potent, however, I hear the main complaint being recoil. But, how many times do you remember recoil when you shot a deer? The only time it is not enjoyable would be at the long end of the sight it session. 44mag would be my choice if travel and ammo availablity was a concern, as well as the fact that ruger makes a nice semi-auto brush gun in 44mag which would be a perfect woods hunt combination.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

I am a big fan of the Colt Anaconda in .44 Mag. My current set up is a 6" with a Tasco PPII. Very accurate and the dot sight is easy for my old eyes to pick up the target. I have hunted with Blackhawks and S&W 629's, but prefer the Colt.

Guns only have two enemies: Rust and Liberals....

Any good revolver in 41 mag. and up
I prefer the Ruger revolvers and have been hunting with them for 28 years. 41 Mag, 45 Colt and now the 480.

For hunting it's hard to beat a T/C contender or encore especially if the shots are over 50 Yds. They are easy to scope and you can have any caliber you want and a choice of barrel lengths. It's a single shot but if you don't connect on the first one....well the second shot is even harder.

I've hunted with both a Desert Eagle .44 and S&W Performance Center .44............I prefer the lighter weight and open sights on the Smith. The .44 is an excellent deer caliber that won't beat you up.....here's some pics of my baby...

You can't go wrong with a Ruger Blackhawk. A new one will fall just outside of your price range and a GOOD used one will be in it. I suggest the .41 Remington Mag. as the BEST revolver hunting caliber.

Had the oportunity to shoot a friends LAR grizzly in 45 magnum over the weekend. I can assure you, it would nock the piss out of a deer and would make an excellant pistol to carry in bear country as well. It was also verry accurate.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

Elmer Keith, God rest his soul, pushed and pulled the GREATEST handgun caliber for hunting game into the 20th century. That would be the 44 magnum. 300gr. JHP w/ 20gr.of H-110 Try it,youll like it! The BEST gun for the job,is a RUGER SUPER BLACKHAWK new model w/ a 10.5 in. barrell and a 2X LEUPOLD scope. Never missed yet! Twenty some years of venison stew and a wild boar or two! "One Shot Showstopper! Buffalo Bob.......

Shootist3006: I don't know where you buy your Rugers at but around here you can get a blue ruger NM Blackhawk in 41 mag for $349, Stainless steel Redhawk for $410 to $450 if it has rings and super redhawk for $489 to $569 depending on model

Pdog: you can also get the redhawk in blue or stainless in 44 mag or 45 colt 5 1/2 or 7 1/2 inch with or without scope rings , you may find you like the way these feel better than the super redhawks,, you should also check out the T/C contenders or encores, many different cal.and barrel lenghts , also take a look at the Bushnell holo sights works great for hunting , much better if you have to take a shot at a moving target,
