Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage, what is it worth?
I have a Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage. I was told this, there is no model number on it. It is a lever action, with brass round indicator. It is NRA Excellent grade. There is no rust, and no chips or cracks in the stock. It says .300 Savage on the barrel with a SP circled after it. It has a number 3 on the frame below the receiver and in front of the lever hinge. I see they are going on GB anywhere from $350 to $650. Why is there such a price difference? Can anyone tell me what mine is worth? The serial number is 435XXX. I appreciate any help.

difficult to advise. I do collect Savage 99's. Ex historian: Roe Clark
would supply the order form for a price.
If your arm has no take-down features, a plus, a lever safety, the rotary count for the cartridges, stock configuration, no xtra holes, etc. I would / perhaps be able to help you. Serial No's. do not mean a lot on Savage arms. Have been thru perhaps thirty. If a later arm, made in Spain, really no collectable value. Just a shooter.If you so desire: E-Mail photos smhco@juno.com

If it's just a standard 99, in 300 Sav. with no special order features, and in excellent condition, they are selling for around 400.00 to 500.00 here in the northeast.
Airborne is right on the serial # ranges, You have to do a lot of research to pinpoint a model with the year of productionand features.
The model number should be stamped on the front frame ring top as such, SAVAGE, Model 99. If it's factory drilled and tapped, it will be marked on the side of it to avoid the holes.
If the markings are on top and it's D&T, it's not original.

Your gun was built in 1945-46. In unaltered excellent condition $500.00-$600.00 would be my est.

I beleive the ones with the takedown feature as well as those with factory target/peep sights are the most sought after, but I am no expert on the model 99's. I have one in great condition with the takedown feature (pre-war) and thought about letting it go, but it is a nice brush gun (if I ever hunt in the brush). Isn't there a model 99 site that can help with all your questions? I seem to recall having seen one, might want to do a search. Just a thought.

You really need a book to figure out just what you have. There are many, many 99EG's out there (about the time frame of yours. I entered the serial number 435000 and got 1946 so Snickers is about right.) and they run from $400-$500 in the southwest.

We also collect and sell many of these guns. Based on what you've told us sounds like Snickers is right on the age of the gun. The key on these guns is wheather it has been changed at all via holes drilled for scope mounts, peep sights or if there are any cracks in the stock which is common on these also. If gun is in great shape like you say it would easily go for $600 here in the NY state area.

REmember that some of the 99's were factory drilled and tapped for mounting scopes. I believe this was later though, in the late 50's at earliest. 0 -

You're right about the drilled and tapped vintage. That's why I asked him if it was or not, and where the model # was located. We see a lot of old Savages here in Maine that have been D&T when they weren't supposed to be.
In my Savage 99 book, it shows some D&T as early as 1950.

Hey guys, the best I can tell I do have the EG model. It has the pistol grip stock with checkering on it and the forarm grip. I removed the scope and the model number was on top of the receiver, drilled and tapped right through the stamping. So it was drilled and tapped aftermarket. It has the lever slide type safety. It does have the brass rotary counter and the raised bead front sight. The lever is case hardened steel. I ran the complete serial number on the Savage 99 web site and it came back to 1946. I do appreciate all the help. I am still confused about what you mean by take down options. Thom

Some of the Model 99's (and other rifles do this as well) are set up so that the barrel is removed from the action for storage in a smaller cases, or (I am not sure about the 99 on this) to allow the use of different chamberings on the same rifle. 0
