ballistic coefficient

what exactly is the ballistic coefficient of a bullet? What does this number actually measure. I thought I posted this yesterday, but can't find post now. Thanks

  From the Speer manual " Ratio of the sectional density of a bullet to it's coefficient of form. Represents the projectile's ability to overcome the resistance of the air in flight." Higher is generally better, but it is used more to predict trajectory of different size, weights and calibers at similar velocities. As an example, at a given velocity, the exterior ballistics of the following bullets with a B.C. of .43 will be the same; .243-100gr BT, .257-120gr BT, .263-120gr SP, .284-145gr SP, .308-165grSP, .338-250gr Grand Slam.
