Is it safe to practice with air guns for self defense? My buddy says that this can get you killed in a real case of self defense. I don't see how, as i do shoot my other guns a few times a week. What do you guys think? I only practice w/my airgun inside and outside only if the neighbors dog eats my dog's food.

For extra shooting practice, there's nothing wrong with an airgun. The more you shoot the better you get. That's also why there are so many 22 conversion kits out there. And the airgun copies of real centerfire guns.
However, you really want to do most of your shooting with the same gun(s) you intend to do damage with. You might also want to unload your favorite guns and substitute some Snap Caps to have dry fire and handling practice away from the range.
The closer to real world you get, the better off you will be. Just practice safely.

many new air guns are designed to look and feel exactly like specific guns to facilitate training. you can learn better gun handling and get a better feel for the gun. there is no substitute for the real thing, but practice with an airgun cannot hurt. yes there is a recoil difference, yes the loading and unloading are different, etc... most of us learned to shoot safely, and to properly handle guns and treat them with respect by training with airguns. they are an invaluable tool to increase your skills with, even the armed forces uses them in training. at the olympic training center in colorado springs they start out all shooters on air guns to study there form and posture when shooting. you also save big bucks on ammo costs when honing your skills with an air gun. we all do not have the time to go to the range on a daily basis, or have a home that allows us to shoot on our property, and shooting an air gun in you house or backyard allows you an outlet for this activity you would not have otherwise.
p.s. even with an air gun wear safety glasses at all times, and be aware of your backstop and what is beyond it.
