I'll put my money on the 788. Remington took it of the market because it outshined the 700. Real fast lock time. I have a .44 Mag that shoots cloverleafs all day.

they were very accurate. they were however taken off the market, certainly not because they outshined the 700, but because the rear locking lugs wore out on any of the larger calibers. The 700's forward lugs are far stronger for the heavier recoiling calibers. Search the auctions and you will find that a 788 in a caliber larger than 308 is rare. Not that they don't exist, but like I said, the locking lugs wore on the larger calibers.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

My opinion is that it was taken off the market because the bolt body broke.
I am in the process of receiving a Bridgeport mill and SouthBend lathe and I am going to see if I can make the bolts as one of my projects. These are great guns and Big Green abandoned those of us who like them.

    I stand corrected. Never have seen a 788 larger than a .308.
This story was told to me by a remington sales rep.

If any of you gentlemen find you have a need for a 788 bolt stop, drop me a line as I have several.

The main thing you can expect from a 788, Is mad shooting partners.A 788 will out shoot a lot of rifles costing four times as much.

The most important things, Are not things.

Varmit Hunter is very correct. I have a plain jane, pencil barreled, wood stocked, (which is rare in my safe) model 788 in 222 that I am getting .33" groups with. Absolutely no modifications what-so-ever. Just a handload.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.
