Is it accurate to say that using a gas checked lead bullet will permit its use in a rifle without leading the barrel? I presume there are limits, but would a 174 grain .308 gas checked lead bullet be OK up to 2,100 fps? 0 -
You only "NEED" gas checks if your pushing your bullets above 1000fps! GOOD LUCK! ...Mark

If you are casting your own bullets the mold should be for either gas checks or not for gas checks. If it has a groove at the bottom of the bullet it is made for a gas check and one should be set when you size the bullet. If the bullet does not have a gas check groove you can't put one on the bullet and you should hold the velocity under 1000 fps when you load the bullet unless it is a very hard lead. 0
