Lyman sights
I recently bought a a3/03 for my father in law for fathers day. It was in really great shape. my question was .......It came with these sniper style peep sights, I soon found out what they were called.(the lyman sight) I heard they were rare. Are they? What does this do too the value of the gun?

In general, drilling and tapping holes to mount aftermarket sights detracts from the value of a rifle. I am assuming the rifle you bought is a .303 British. It might have a Lyman 48 sight. If so, it is a very good sight but not much in demand as it can only be used on the model rifle for which it is designed. Lyman 48S and 48C sights are in demand because they fit 1903 and 1922 Series Springields. Lyman 48 WJS fits model 70 Winchesters so it is also in demand. These sell on the auctions for $75 to $125 depending on condition. I believe you recd some bad information about the sniper's use of peep sights. Snipers have used telescopic sights since the Civil War.
Nearly all rifles built for the US military from WWII forward have peep sights but they are far use of the infantryman, not snipers.0 -

sounds more like he has a 03-A3 Springfield (30-06), that has had a Lyman sight installed on it.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

You will have to be more clear on describing the rifle to tell if it's original to the gun, or an aftermarket. Like make, model and serial # range.

The rifle is a springfield 03/ A3 in 30-06........ the sights look original.....serials on the gun as reads on the top of the reciever..... U.S Springfield armory model 1903 # 1,422,748... on the bottom of the magazine the rifle reads..........r943245 then with the name R. Spacey directly below...... that is all that is on the gun.... as for the sights. I know that they are lyman... I was probably miss informed on the sniper part of it... know that I have engaged my brain I see you are right. I dont know what model sight they are though.. but no they are not permanantly fixed.

jastr, the serial number you give indicates that you have a Springfield 1903. Not a 1903A3. The rifle receiver is nickle steel which is considered safe to shoot, assuming headspace is ok and there are not other problems. It could be a rifle that someone installed a Lyman 48 sight on to use in competition shooting. More likely it was sporterized. It could be a very valuable gun or worth only the value of its parts, depending on who made it. Would you describe the stock? With a name engraved on the floorplate, I suspect it was owned by someone who was proud of it and it may have been custom made.
