Unertl's - Focusing
I have a Unertl 24X, and at a known 100 yards, at the 100 yard setting, it is crystal clear, and has no parallax. At 300+ yards, I have to use the 100 yard setting to get things clear. I may not be doing things correctly. I have no instructions, for the scope was made in the late forty's. Can someone who knows the older scopes, direct me on how to focus the eye piece, and how to adjust the parallax ring for clear viewing? Or do I just try to get a crisp crosshair, and not worry about the yardage markings on the parallax ring, and just turn until I get a sharp image, and check for parallax. I usually use Leupold's, but man, the Unertl looks awsome on top of the new grounghog gun. Help form an ol timer, or anyone who know's this stuff would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has a unertl instruction manual they could copy and e-mail, that would be great. Thanks to all.

From what I remember on my old one, you don't just move the parrallax ring. Once you move the ring, you have to push or pull the bell, then tighten the other locking ring. Don't feel bad, it took me a week to figure mine out.

Optical deviations are much more visable at higher powers. It maybe that you are properly adjusting the objective, but not the occular (eyepiece).
What did you adjust first? Please list in specifically in order.

Thanks to all for helping out. I focused the eye piece first, on a white sheet of paper, to get the cross wire bold. Then I tried it at 100, and it was good. I then tried on a leaf in the neighbor's yard, at about 300 and had to turn to the 100 yard setting, to get it clear. With everyone's help, we'll get it figured out. It seems that your describing an "out of focus" problem.
More specifically, when the crosshairs are on the target at 100yds, they BOTH are sharp.
When the crosshairs are on a target at 300 yds, one or the other is sharp, but NOT BOTH.
Is that correct?
