Why would you want to scope a Marlin Cowboy?

    Pete,
If you are going to scope it, I wouldn't recommend using see thru mounts for a couple of reasons. 1)It will raise the scope about an inch more than a regular mount. 2)You will have a harder time to get a fast sight picture with it being that high.

You want to be able to bring your rifle up to your shoulder and instinctively rest your cheek on the stock, and pick up a good sight picture. You can do that better with lower mounts. It also depends on the comb of the stock. This is something you will have to determine as you are mounting the scope.

Depending on how far foward, or how long the scope is will determine if you have to remove the rear sight or not. My preference for a scope on a rifle like that would be a lower power variable, like a 1.5-5, or something like that. Hope this helps a little.

Bullelk nailed it. See through mounts will likely require lifting your cheek from the stock to sight, and that ain't good. Leave it open sighted, or go with low mounts and a low power scope (you can save money on a fixed 4x or 6x), and sacrifice the iron sights.
