A .308 that wont break the bank?
I shot a bunch of rifles last night, and I defenitly enjoyed the .308 bolt action the most. The question is, what is a good .308/scope that will be acurate enough for a newbie without emptying my pocket book?

Savage 110 with a scope package deal is about $350.00 thats about as cheap as it gets for a decent bolt action in .308.

OK are you looking for a .308 rifle? a scope for a .308 rifle or a .308 rifle and scope? I am not sure from your remarks. Foe a not too exspensive .308 the Gibbs Ectream II or III would work. A simple solid 4X scope. My 2 cents 0 -
Sorry I wasnt clear, I ment scope and rifle. 0 -
What do you concider "Breaking the Bank?" ... $300, $500, $1000 ... its all relitive! lots of GREAT 308's in the $500-$750 range, and a few for less, espically if you concider used.
What I've seen and heard about the Gibbs "Quest" rifles, they are #5 Enfield Jungle Carbines that have been re-barreled in 308, "restored" with new finish & stock ... the ones I've seen have looked nice but I've seen and heard they have a wandering zero after a few rounds. A guy at the range offered to sell me his for $200 ... after complaining about 6" groups ... probably shouldn't have, but I passed. I have had an Enfield Ishapore 308 Arsenal re-barrel that was a heck of a shooter, put it in a synthetic MonteCarlo stock open sights it would shoot 1.5-2" groups with cheap CAVIM ammo.
For a really under-rated gun, look at the Remington 788 or if you want new a Romington 700 ADL or Salvage ... I mean Savage, as mentioned above is a good is a good buy.
Alot of the time you can pick up a good buy walking around the gunshows, but you need to know what your looking for/at.

The Savage is as good as it gets,Price vs value. I have a Savage model 11f that I bought for a very good price when a gun store closed. They are dressed up better than the model 110, very nice checkered stock Polyeurothane finished etc. The model 110 comes with bore sighted simmons scope, swivels leather sling, ready to go. And it is a good shooting Gun,all that for about $350.00. Savage has improved their quality. Hope this helps.

Go to one of your local gun shops and ask them to show you some and maybe go with a good used one. I would rather have a used remington or winchester (a good model) than some of the new cheaper ones. The good gun shops will offer you at least a 1 year warranty on used guns. we did. They will also probably give you a good deal this time of year too.

Kind of depends, on how much you are going to use the rifle/scope combo. The weight you want or need to carry. AND how much you have to spend. 0 -
WELL ...I need to tell you two things! Frist as a rule of thumb buy the most expensive weapons you can afford! You'll never be sorry in the long run! Cheap guns don't appriecate much. AND SECONDLY, I had a gun smith friend tell me a long time ago, on the average, the Rem 700 is the most accurate weapon OFF the production line. My 2 cents, GOOD LUCK!! ...Mark
