Will 1100 Mag shoot 2 3/4" shells?
Has anyone owned a Remington 1100 Magnum (3" chamber) that would not cycle standard 2 3/4" shells? Mine works fine with everything but light target loads (it cycles about 4 out of 5 of those). I keep it clean which might make a difference!!
Are there any other experiences?

The 1100 barrel is the key...The 3" chambered barrels have one gas port. sized to cause the action to cycle using a 3" magnum shotshell. A barrel that has a 2-3/4" chamber has 2 gas ports sized to cause the action to cycle on the reduced pressure generated by the lighter load of the 2-3/4" shotshell. I think you will find that the lighter the load in a 2-3/4" shell, the less likely it is to work in the 3" barrel. The easiest solution to the problem is to get a 2-3/4" barrel for those time you intend to use lighter loads....The difference is in the barrels.. 0 -
B/W- Jim has it right! I Bought a 1100 Rem 20ga. mag. WAYBACK when. But I started to shoot skeet about then too. And like you said, with the ligth loads the gun would not function. SO... I when out a bought a skeet barrel, everything worked great then! And now, after swinging the big ole mag around to shoot skeet, with a proper light skeet gun I have great pick-up on the clays!*G* Good Luck! ...Mark

MOST 1 1/4 OZ LOADS WILL WORK A 1100 3", 1 1/8 OZ TARGET LOADS ARE SO/SO UNLESS THE GAS SYSTEM IS VERY CLEAN AND WELL LUBED. 0 -
Thanks for the feedback. I shot skeet with this gun for several months with no problems except w/ light loads. Now I've sold it here and the winning bidder wants to back out because his FFL transfer dealer told him this gun wouldn't shoot 2 3/4" shells...I just want him to get the real answer.

If your buyer thinks his 1100 is going to function like an 11/87, it wont. Only the heavier 2 3/4" loads will function the 1100 Mag.

Either way it would have been nice if he'd have made his decision before he won the auction...This is already the second time I've had a winning bidder not come through on this same gun (for different reasons)

B/W, IME, the more info one puts in the listing the better, especially anticipating questions like this whenever possible. The boilerplate in my listings, developed over time, covers every BS objection I've seen - and right at the front: "ask before bidding!" 0 -
One more thought...It's not the ounces of shot...It's the dram equivelent that dwtermines the power to cycle the action....determines recoil too.... 0 -
i have had the same proablem with low brass shells but i have never had a proablem shooting with hi brass 2 3/4 in my 3"

There is a trick to making it shoot. Take it to a experienced gunsmith and ask him to drill a matching gas hole likethe 2 3/4" barrell has.
Saw a Rem 1100 mag work on light shells after this modification, never did know whether it would shoot 3" mags again.
Anyone ever hear of this?0 -
There is a reason the Magnum barrels have only one gas port. Drilling a second gas port in a barrel that could chamber and fire a 3" shell is asking for trouble.
That's not an 'experienced' gunsmith. That is a guy with a drill press and no concept of the term "finished product liability."
