    I thought it was a shorter barrel lever action rifle. Is this a distinction, or does it not matter if it is or is not a lever action?

    Not to be rude but i didn't give myself this name to make YOU happy. I thought Coonass wasn't very cool when I first saw it but I continued on my way and never commented on it.

    An example is the Winchester mdl 71. They were made in 24" and 20" barrels, and the factory referred to them both as rifles, but the collectors dubbed the 20" ones as carbines. Then again, they also made other models with shorter than standard barrels and called them rifles, and collectors call them short rifles.
    But to todays standards, I guess you would call most rifles with 20" or shorter barrels, carbines. That would be my opinion.

    Guns and ammo had an issue about what a carbine is. Kinda confusing, but basically it is a shorter barrel. I'll see if I can fnd the issue and call you when I find it, or you can ask dad. He was in the army a long long time ago. He always tells me he like the M1-carbine he used back then.

    To the average shooter the carbine is just a short rifle,sometimes but not always subcaliber,example being the m1 carbine vs. the Garand.Unless I was writing a book I wouldnt worry about technical definitions etc.
